My Mother often spoke about her childhood in Boston, rich with memories of dear Galway hanging high; and the name she used most often was her father, Michael Donelan; Mother said he was a hi-ho guy (whatever that means) He was a hi-ho guy with a chip upon his shoulder, Boston warrior with the devil in his eye; and, by what grace he had, he was a son of Glenamaddy Mother said he was a hi-ho guy (whatever that means) Two daughters dead and two more children institutionalized found Michael with a fondness for the drink and for the brawl; one night they found him bruised and beaten, never privy to the reason and thus did Michael Donelan come to fall; He was a hi-ho guy with a chip upon his shoulder, Boston warrior with the devil in his eye; and, by what grace he had, he was a son of Glenamaddy Mother said he was a hi-ho guy (whatever that means) My Mother often counseled with this woeful tale of caution; keep your mouth shut lest you be well off to die; She'd say the fall of Michael Donelan likely was some smart-ass comment you'd do well to be a hi-ho guy (whatever that means) He was a hi-ho guy with a chip upon his shoulder, Boston warrior with the devil in his eye; and, by what grace he had, he was a son of Glenamaddy Mother said he was a hi-ho guy (whatever that means)

Once a year in Woodlawn Cemetery when August in bright green is dressed, clowns from the world over gather in a place that they call Showmen's Rest. Was June 22, 1918 4 am and the circus asleep; the last of two trains, filled with faces and names which that dark stretch of railroad still keeps; (Chorus) The markers read "Baldy' and "Smiley" and "Unknown Female 43"; by the stone elephants, lay down a while your souls from the sawdust ring are free. From Illinois they were headed out to Hammond. from there moving onto Monroe. From nowhere a troop train came screaming down Michigan Central Railroad; One Alonzo K. Sargent had been sleeping missed the warnings, red signals and flares; desperate, the flagmen all called out in vain that the train had been stopped for repairs. The markers read "Baldy" and "Smiley" and "Unknown Female 43"; by the stone elephants, lay down a while your souls from the sawdust ring are free. Most were dead inside of thirty seconds in a mass of crushed steel, wood and wire. Some who'd survived were then burned alive when the kerosene lanterns caught fire. Joe Coyle convulsing and crying; his wife and two boys crushed to death; in the end only two shows were cancelled but still today passers-by hold their breath. As the second train held their grim roll-cal black smoke still hung thick at the scene; in Showmen's Rest yearly they gather when August is dressed in bright green; The markers read "Baldy" and "Smiley" and "Unknown Female 43"; by the stone elephants, lay down a while your souls from the sawdust ring are free. l
